How to network at a conference without the card stack

Most advice is about what to say. What decides whether anything comes of it is the ten seconds after. Here is the sequence, with a free tool for each step.

Step 3 · On the floor

There is no tool for this part. There are three habits.

Everything that goes wrong with conference follow-up goes wrong here, in the ten seconds after a good conversation ends, while you are already shaking the next hand.

01

Write the context, not the contact

Their name is on the badge. What is not recorded anywhere is that they are replacing their CRM in Q1 and the decision sits with a VP called Dan. Say it into a voice note before you walk away.

02

Only scan real conversations

A badge scanned for a tote bag is not a lead, and 400 of them will bury the 30 that were. Scan the people you would recognise in a lift.

03

Put your QR where the camera already is

If any part of the event is hybrid, your card belongs on your video background and in the chat, not only in your pocket.

Step 4 · The week after

The cards in your bag have about five days before they stop meaning anything

You do not have to type them in one by one. Photograph the pile, scan it in one go, and put the organiser's lead export through the same cleanup.

Eleven free tools, no account needed

Banners, signatures, QR codes, card scanning, file conversion. Use the ones you need for this event and ignore the rest.
